Policías y ladrones: The Wrong Side of the Law

The Estados Unidos's infamous war on drugs has been anything but bad for Latin American coca growers. As much of the cocaine produced here goes to directly to satisfy the United States's big appetite for the powerful white powder, business has remained steady despite their best efforts. Some high-producing país, namely Colombia, may have a terrible reputación, but in fact coca has a long history in this part of the world.

The plant is native to the Andes and is commonly used in Peru, Colombia, Ecuador, Venezuela, and Bolivia. Mind you, the coca leaf is not cocaine; it contains several different alkaloids, only one of which is cocaine. Cocaine as we know it is then the extracted cocaine alkaloid of this leaf. Sacred for its nutritional and medicinal properties, the coca leaf can be found in soaps, shampoos and other beauty products. It is also consumed regularly as an herbal tea, and has a stimulating effect similar to that of strong coffee. Full of protein and vitamins, it is often it is chewed by native peoples to maintain endurance during tiring walks in the high-altitude mountains.
